A Beginner's Guide to Sound Baths in Kansas City

Updated September 29, 2026

A sound bath for beginners in Kansas City needs no experience, gear or special skill. You lie down and listen while live singing bowls and chimes are played for about an hour. The easiest place to start is the Wednesday Open Session in Overland Park: $25, 5:30–6:30 pm. Private groups start at $275.

If you've never done a sound bath, you can't do it wrong. Showing up and lying down is enough.

Crystal and bronze singing bowls, a gong, Koshi chimes and tongue drums set up for a beginner-friendly sound bath.

Do you need experience to do a sound bath?

No. No belief or experience needed. You just lie down and listen.

There are no poses to learn and nothing to perform. You don't need to know how to meditate. Your only job is to get comfortable and let the sound move around you.

At the Wednesday Open Session, I also guide a short yoga nidra. Yoga nidra is a lying-down practice where you follow a calm voice as it moves your attention through the body. You don't need to know it beforehand. You just listen and follow along, or drift.

The worry I hear most from first-timers is that they won't be able to relax, or stay comfortable, for a whole hour. Most aren't sure what to expect. That's normal. Most people arrive still carrying their day, and it takes a few minutes to settle. During the opening breathwork, I can see shoulders start to drop. Once I start playing, many people feel their body soften and their mind get quieter.

If you're worried you can't relax, here's what I tell everyone at the start. Stay with this room and this moment. When a thought pulls you somewhere else, let it pass without following it. Bring your attention back to your breath, and breathe slowly and deeply into your belly. You're also free to shift, change positions, open your eyes, sit up or step out at any time. This hour is yours to rest in whatever way works for you.

If you like to know every step ahead of time, read what to expect at your first sound bath. It walks through the hour from arrival to the last bowl.

Which kind of sound bath should you book?

Start with the Wednesday Open Session if you're curious and coming on your own. Book a private or corporate session if you want a sound bath for your own group.

Wednesday Open Session. This is the lowest-commitment way to try a sound bath. It runs every Wednesday, 5:30–6:30 pm, and includes guided yoga nidra. Mats, bolsters and blankets are provided. Details and booking are on the weekly open session page.

Private and group sound baths. I bring the full set of instruments to your home or venue for a 60–75 minute session. People book them for birthdays, bachelorettes, bridal showers, book clubs, women's circles, couples and families. Studios and wellness businesses book them too. See the private sound bath page for dates.

Corporate sound baths. A 60-minute session for a team, seated in chairs or lying on mats. No AV is needed. Planners can find pricing and booking details on the sound baths for teams page.

Sound bath retreats. For a longer experience, half-day, full-day and weekend retreats weave live sound together with gentle yoga, breathwork, meditation and yoga nidra. Packages start at $1,200 for a 3-hour half-day for up to 20 guests. They suit studios, retreat leaders, women's circles and company offsites more than first-timers, but it helps to know they exist.

How to book your first Wednesday session

  1. Reserve on Vagaro. Spots are $25 per person. Booking ahead holds your spot.
  2. Arrive a few minutes early. Very Well KC is at 7905 Santa Fe Dr in Overland Park.
  3. Set up your space. Take a mat, a bolster and a blanket, and get comfortable.
  4. Lie back and listen. The session starts at 5:30 pm and ends at 6:30 pm.

How much does a sound bath cost in Kansas City?

At Carried Sound, a sound bath costs $25 per person on Wednesdays, $275–$900 for a private or group session of 1–40 people, and $650–$1,200 for a corporate team of 5–40. Groups larger than 40 and multi-session bookings are quoted.

Private & group sizePricePer person at full group
1–4 people$275About $69
5–10 people$450$45
11–20 people$675About $34
21–40 people$900About $23
40+ or multi-sessionQuote—

The price is for the whole group, so the cost per person drops as the group grows. At 36 guests or more, a private session works out to $25 per person or less, the same as a Wednesday drop-in.

Every private, group and corporate price includes all instruments, setup and pack-out. Travel is included within 20 miles of Overland Park. Beyond that, travel is $0.76 per mile, round trip. A mat and blanket kit is available for $8 per guest, or $120 flat for up to 20.

So what does the extra cost of a private session buy? You choose the date, the place and the guest list. The room holds only your people, and the session can run 60–75 minutes. On Wednesdays, you share the room with whoever else reserved a mat that week.

What should you wear and bring?

Wear soft, comfortable clothes you can lie down in, and bring a warm layer. That covers most of it.

  • Layers and socks. You'll be still for an hour, and some people feel cooler as they settle.
  • Water. A small bottle for before and after.
  • An eye pillow or scarf (optional). Some people like something over their eyes. Others keep their eyes open.
  • Your phone on silent, or left in your bag.

For the Wednesday Open Session, mats, bolsters and blankets are provided, so you only need to bring yourself. Reserve your spot on Vagaro ahead of time. For a private group at home, guests can bring their own mats and pillows, or you can add the mat and blanket kit.

What if you fall asleep, cough or feel emotional?

All three happen, and all three are fine. A sound bath is a guided hour of rest, and rest looks different for everyone.

Falling asleep. Many people drift off, especially after a long day. That's still rest, and you won't miss anything you need.

Coughing or moving. Cough, shift, roll to your side or sit up whenever you need to. You can step out to use the restroom and come back. You won't be the first.

Feeling emotional. Sometimes feelings come up when you finally slow down. Tears, a memory or a sense of release can all show up. Let them pass without judging them. If you want to talk about it afterward, you can find me after the session. A sound bath is a space for rest. It isn't medical or mental health treatment, and it doesn't replace either.

Where do sound baths happen around Kansas City?

Carried Sound is mobile, so most sound baths happen wherever your group gathers. The one fixed spot is the weekly session in Overland Park.

  • Wednesday Open Session: Very Well KC, 7905 Santa Fe Dr, Overland Park, KS 66204.
  • Private, group and corporate sessions: homes, studios, offices and venues across the Kansas City metro. That includes Overland Park, Leawood, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, Mission, Merriam, Prairie Village, Kansas City (KS and MO), Lee's Summit and Parkville.
  • No space at home? Private sessions can also be held in the Very Well KC studio.

Every session is led by Joann Schermerhorn, an ISTA Certified Therapeutic Sound Practitioner and a Sound Healing Arts Facilitator and Educator (200 hours, The Sound Medicine Academy). You can read more about Joann's training.

Who should check with a doctor first?

Anyone with epilepsy, a pregnancy, a pacemaker or other implanted device, severe sound sensitivity or a history of trauma should check with their healthcare provider and tell Joann before booking. For most beginners, there's nothing to prepare beyond comfortable clothes.

If you're ready to try one, the Wednesday session is the simplest first step. Reserve a mat, show up a few minutes early and let the hour do the rest.
